The Jomsborgelag was originally formed in the UK in about 1988. It was an independent group within the Norse Film and Pageant Viking Society (The Vikings - NFPS). Several longstanding members of the The Vikings - NFPS helped form the Jomsborgelag, or Elag as it was affectionately known by it's members.

The Jomsborgelag immediately made it's presence felt on the battlefields of the UK, brave young lads and lasses, yes lasses, the Jomsborgelag originally fielded the most amount of female combatants of any group before or since. So, with a natural flair for display, having a daring fighting style and instilled, through training, with a propensity to attack (it was the women who made us do it, honest! ;) ), especially in the face of overwhelming numbers, they just went into death or glory mode and quite usually came out victorious!

In the early days, a young Huscarl called Hafgrim was created by his Jarl, Ulf-Erik - one of the founding members, to help train the Jomsborgelag members, this he did to the best of his abilities.

One concept that the Jomsborgelag has always held close to it's heart, is in being open to new experiences, especially when adventure is involved! Just like their Viking forefathers, they perceived no boundaries to their movement, this was a crucial factor in opening up Europe to UK Viking re-enactors.

Europe was ready for Viking re-enactment and the Jomsborgelag were ready for battle and plunder. It would be untrue to say that European Viking re-enactment was formed in the image of the Jomsborgelag, but it is certainly true to say that they were everywhere, leading from the front, setting an example of how it could be done. They did, however, leave one big mark of their own, the Jomsviking System of Combat. All Viking age groups in Europe now use this system of combat for re-enactment battles and skirmishes.

Many twists and many turns later, the Jomsborgelag and it's allies left the NFPS in 1993 to pursue their own destiny. Things just kept getting better. The Jomsvikings were formed, an elite brotherhood of Modern Age Vikings, sworn to loyalty and the pursuit of excellence and adventure. Members of the Jomsborgelag aspire through valiant deeds, showmanship, and dedication to be Jomsvikings, many are called, but only few are chosen.

Now the Jomsvikings - Army of Jomsborg consists of several Jomsborgelag Chapters all around the world. And goes from strength to strength under the guidance and vision of the Jarl Ulf Erik and the council of Jomsvikings.
